Dr. Jegasothy selected hyaluronic acid as the primary healing and hydrating agent. The team used high molecular weight ( 2 million Dalton) pharmaceutical-grade Hyaluronic Acid that holds 1000 times weight in water and saturate the skin with hydration and retains the essential dissolved oxygen for wound healing. Hyaluronic acid super hydrated improves texture, minimizes itching, improves desquamation, minimizes scabbing and Minimizes acne/ millia formation compared to occlusive petrolatum in laser resurfaced skin.

In addition, the team formulated Post Laser Balm with grape stem cells and Beta Glucan to activate growth factors prompting cellular renewal for wound healing. Beta glucan extracted from oats can communicate with immune system and can stimulate the macrophages which ingest and destroys pathogens. Macrophages releases cytokines which communicate with other immune cells. Furthermore, beta glucan stimulates the white blood cells to viruses and tumours and releases chemicals to destroy them. Beta glucan acts as anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. University of Alberta ( Canada) studies have shown that beta glucan can help in wound healing and reduction in scaring.

Furthermore, Post Laser Balm was formulated with highly potent 50% concentrated polyphenol extracted from green tea , concentrated Turmeric extract and grape stem cells to help in wound healing process. Moreover, Australian plant extract Centipeda Cunninghami that is 3000 times more in anti-inflammatory and calendula extract were incorporated in the formulation to minimize inflammation, swelling and redness which starts immediately after Laser procedure and help to reduce wound healing time without post Laser care.

The plant derived olive leaf, citrus extracts, ethylhexylglycerin, Capryl Glycol and caprylhydroxamic acid are combined to help in product preservation without chemical preservatives such as paraben.

HYMED Beginning

HYMED Skincare was developed to help wound healing post laser and surgical procedures, as a more effective alternative to traditional, occlusive, petrolatum based post laser care.

Brain Jegasothy, MD, formerly chair of Dept of Dermatology at University of Pittsburgh and Dr. Lingam, rocket scientist with Ayurvedic medicine roots, developed Hymed Skincare to help wound healing post laser and surgical procedures. As a research dermatologist, Dr. Jegasothy’s evaluation of irritants in skincare in 1988, led to the discovery that 99% of skincare products include inflammatory and irritating ingredients that can cause free radical damage and hence premature aging as well as slowing down of wound healing process. This discovery resulted in the foundation of Hylunia skincare in 1988 and Hymed skincare in 1994.

The introduction of laser treatments in the 90’s especially carbon dioxide lasers, highlighted the need for better and more effective alternatives to petrolatum based post laser care. When the skin is wounded, the healing process of epithelialization, collagen deposition, wound contraction and neovascularization must happen smoothly without disruption. Any delay in the healing process can result in complications and may alter the desired results. To ensure a smooth healing process, all Hymed formulations include anti-inflammatory ingredients, powerful antioxidants and growth factor stimulating components, while excluding synthetic preservatives, fragrances, dyes, lanolin and any irritating elements.

Pure Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is a major component of skin and is involved in tissue repair. The skin provides a mechanical barrier to the external environment and acts to prevent the ingress of infectious agents. Once injured, the tissues beneath are exposed to infection; therefore, rapid and effective healing is of crucial significance to reconstruct the barrier function. While found naturally throughout our body, Hyaluronic Acid unfortunately has a short shelf life and is naturally broken down and flushed out of the body in 1-3 days. For this reason, it is imperative that the body continually replenishes itself with Hyaluronic Acid. Daily application of Hymed Pure Hyaluronic Acid serum post laser treatments, helps in hydrating and healing the skin and minimizes scabbing.

Clinical studies have shown (Ref; 1 & 2) that radiated wounds heal quicker with Hyaluronic Acid. Holding 1000 times its weight in water, Hyaluronic Acid effectively binds water to cells, and is responsible for the elasticity and resilience of the skin. According to Dr. Brian Jegasothy, M.D., former Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh: “Hyaluronic Acid is possibly the most effective topical humectants currently available: more effective in its water retention properties than glycerin, sorbitol, collagen etc. In addition, its ability to associate with lipids in skin surface membranes greatly enhances its ability to deliver its retained water and enriches its property by reducing the trans epidermal water loss”. Grape Stem Cells

Grape stem cells have shown to regenerate adult stem cells in the basal layer of the skin. Grape stem cells contain epigenetic factors and metabolites which are able to protect against UV radiation which destroys adult stem cells in the skin. The Hymed Post Laser Balm contains grape stem cells high in anthocyanin that have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and accelerate the regeneration of the skin.

Centipeda Cunninghamii Extract

Commonly known as Old Man Weed, it is a plant known to indigenous Australians for its medicinal properties. It can be identified by its unique shaped leaf and pungent scent, which is pine like and minty. This extraordinary botanical extract from the Daisy family demonstrates outstanding results in minimizing inflammation and increasing fibroblast cells. A study by Wellington School of Medicine in New Zealand discovered that Centipeda Cunninghamii solution less than 1% is more active than Methyl Salicylate such as Aspirin by 3,000 times and increases the rate of fibroblast growth by 50%. Hymed Post Laser Balm contains 3% Centipeda Cunninghamii solution providing an enhanced anti-inflammatory effect. Furthermore, Centipeda Cunninghamii increases fibroblast growth and promotes cell regeneration and healing while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The Old Man Weed has been patented by a company in Australia and is claimed to be effective in the treatment of various skin disorders including the relief of itching and dry skin from psoriasis, as well as having anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic, cell renewal properties and an SPF 6. Calendula

Calendula, also known as Marigold, is used in Europe for centuries as an herbal remedy and is well known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Calendula extract is rich in beta-carotene, stearin, triterpenoids, flavonoids and coumarin, as well as microelements. For this reason, Calendula has powerful wound-healing and skin-soothing properties. Due to its antiseptic and healing properties It is usually used externally in treating skin infections, cuts, punctures, scrapes, burns and chapped or chafed skin.

Green Tea

Used throughout the centuries by Ayurvedic, Chinese, Tibetan and other Eastern medical practitioners. Grean tea is rich in antioxidants, particularly polyphenols and catechins, which have a wide array of anti-inflammatory, adaptogenic, anticarcinogenic and antiseptic properties. L-Theanine, a chemical found in Green Tea, is known to soothe and calm the skin, while caffeine and epigallocatechin gallate, the most abundant catechin in green tea, helps protect the skin from UV-radiation induced damage and skin cancer formation by stimulating the production of interleukins that repair the skin’s DNA. Green tea creates micro circulation and helps in product penetration and efficacy.

Hymed uses green tea extract that is concentrated to 50% polyphenol and is 400 times more potent than normal green tea extract.

Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum has been used for centuries to treat inflammation and headaches. Chrysanthemum Indicum is an aqueous extract rich in specific flavonoids and two saponosides. The synergic blend of Green Tea and Chrysanthemum provides skin with the most powerful antioxidants to protect against DNA alteration from sun exposure and free radicals created during laser procedures.

Preservation System

The Post Laser Balm is preserved with a combination of Ethylhexylglycerin, Caprylyl Glycol, Olive leaf and wasabi extracts.

Shea Butter (Natural substitute for Petrolatum)

Shea butter is an ivory-colored natural emollient extracted from the nut of the African shea tree by crushing, boiling and stirring. It is widely used in skin care as a moisturizer. African healers and beauties have known about shea butter for thousands of years: the substance is almost magical in its healing effects on burns, skin conditions, ulcerated skin, stretch marks, and dryness. It contains beneficial vegetable emollient that promote cell regeneration and circulation, making it a wonderful healer and rejuvenator for troubled or aging skin. It also contains natural sun-protectants.

Shea butter is sometimes called “women’s gold”, because extracting the butter from the nuts gives employment and income to hundreds of thousands of rural African village women. Hylunia- Hymed is a Fair-Trade Company and import Shea butter from Ghana.
